Introducing the Classic Car Campus
The skills that built the great cars of the 1920s and 1930s are disappearing: shaping metal by hand, building ash frames, the coachbuilder’s eye for line and proportion, the bespoke upholstery and surface coatings. I’d like to help keep them alive.
I’m a retired Oil & Gas engineer, and I build full-size tributes to the classic cars of the Golden Age of Motoring in my own workshop. My Morgan Aero tribute took 800 hours of tube rolling, MIG welding and English-wheeling aluminium. Tributes to a Blower Bentley, a Jonckheere “Round Door” Rolls-Royce and a Jaguar XKSS are under way now.
The next step is the Classic Car Campus: a place to share these skills and pass them on. I’m looking for:
- Enthusiasts who want to learn, or who have skills and stories to share
- Students from technical schools, colleges and universities looking for hands-on projects in fabrication, design and engineering
- Teachers and lecturers who would like to bring their students into a real build
- Manufacturers and suppliers of motor-vehicle, metalworking, coachbuilding, upholstery and surface coating equipment who would like to demonstrate, support or sponsor.
The plans are still taking shape, and that’s the point: I’d like the people who join to help shape them.
